MATERIALS AND FINISHES

MATERIALS AND FINISHES

At Vizzualty Woods, every piece I craft starts with a thoughtful selection of quality timber and finishes. I work mainly with sustainably sourced hardwoods from Australia and overseas, choosing each board for its unique character, grain, and colour. Whether you’re after something clean and minimal or rich and full of contrast, the species and finish you select can shape the whole look and feel of a piece.

Each timber has its own personality—some are bold and full of character, others are more subtle and refined. And because timber is a natural material, variation is part of the beauty. No two pieces will ever be the same.

Below is a guide to the most commonly used timber species and the finishes I offer. If you’re after something custom or would like to see samples in person, feel free to get in touch.

TIMBER OPTIONS

AMERICAN WALNUT

Our most premium timber. American Walnut has a chocolate brown heartwood with creamy sapwood highlights and a rich, velvety texture. It’s incredibly smooth to the touch and brings a timeless elegance to any design.

AMERICAN OAK

Known for its prominent grain and strength, American Oak sits a touch darker than Tasmanian Oak, with tones from pale honey to soft brown. It’s a favourite for adding warmth and texture without overpowering a space.

TASMANIAN OAK

A clean, light-toned hardwood native to Tasmania. It ranges from straw to pale brown, sometimes with a soft reddish hue. Its straight grain and subtle appearance make it perfect for minimal, modern pieces. A great option when you want the timber to feel present but not loud.

TASMANIAN BLACKWOOD

Deep, warm, and full of character. This timber ranges from golden brown to deep chocolate, often with striking grain features. It’s one of the richest native timbers we work with and ideal for statement pieces.

WHY FINISHES MATTER

The finish not only protects the timber but plays a big role in how the final piece feels and looks. Whether it’s a matte oil that leaves the wood feeling raw and organic, or a more refined finish that enhances contrast and grain, the choice of finish is just as important as the timber itself.

If you’re unsure which combination is right for your project, I’m always happy to help you choose—or I can prepare a few samples to compare in person.
